SNP branch convenor and campaigner was Kennedy’s vicious Twitter troll

Today’s edition of the Daily Mail has a front page story unmasking the viciously hurtful Twitter troll who serially vented bile against the late Charles Kennedy on this platform for the mindless.

He is Brian Smith, the senior local SNP organiser – Convener of the Skye and Lochalsh branch of the party – and a core campaigner for Ian Blackford, the SNP MSP who took the Ross Skye and Lochaber seat from Mr Kennedy in the May UK General Election.

Mr Blackford is in full ‘Nothing to do with me, Guv’ mode today, saying that he never employed Mr Smith and knew nothing about his trolling savagery against Mr Kennedy. Given the Daily Mail’s meticulous details of the long standing friendship between the two men, the close proximity of their homes on Skye and Mr Smith’s frequent presence at Mr Blackford’s Portree campaign HQ, such denial is of threadbare credibility.

Mr Blackford himself appears of similar ilk. He was on unpleasant and bullying active rampage in the campaign, turning up in April at Mr Kennedy’s campaign office accompanied by a phalanx of no fewer than four SNP activists – to ‘launch a tirade against Lib Dem activists’ in an incident so intimidating that police were called to the premises.

This is the reality of what so much of the outside world, which sees and experiences nothing – has been persuaded is the happy hippiedom of Scottish nationalism.

The rip-roaring rise of the SNP bears all the hallmarks of the typical modus operandi of reactionary authoritarian nationalism. The impulse is repressive; the means ugly and often violent; and the objective total domination.

The surface picture of an educated and fairly articulate elite is underpinned by mob thuggery en masse. Those at the top of the nationalist pyramid avert their eyes, lift their noses away from the stench, do not want to be informed and maintain a position of deniability, seeing nothing, hearing nothing and saying  nothing.

But they know full well what goes on. They licence it by passive consent.  They comfortably reap the massive political rewards of this strategic intimidation.

The SNP has draconian control. evident in the formal strictures gagging thier MPS. If this party really wants to outlaw totally unacceptable and vicious behaviours, they can do it easily and quickly. Take off the blindfold. Remove the ear plugs. Clear the throat, speak out on the penalties and start imposing them: automatic expulsion from the party and lifetime membership bans on the first strike – deployed on the basis of  circumstantial evidence with no corroboration necessary.

Any SNP supporter who accepts these cynical denials and holds that the SNP hierarchy have no idea of this sort of behaviour and are innocent and horrified – is guilty of existential bad faith in full degree. ['Bad faith' in existentialism - the sternest and most demanding of all philosophies - is defined in occasions where a human being, under pressure from social (or political) forces, adopts false values and disowns their individual responsibility, in to self-deception and resentment.]

In the small hour of 9th May, after Mr Kennedy had driven back after the count for his Ross, Skye and Lochaber seat, which he had lost, he found the entrance to his house outside Fortwilliam trashed by bins deliberately emptied with the contents spread all over the place. The deliberate vicious symbolism of this action is dreadful.

At around the same time, Brian Smith was posting on his Facebook page: GIRFUY [apparently an acronym for 'Get it right f****** up you] you drunken slob Kennedy. Lies and deceit don’t work. Bye Bye.’

Today, a month later, is the final ‘Bye Bye’ to Charles Kennedy, no doubt an event that the troglodyte that is Brian Smith will celebrate as the sealing of a memorable triumph. Scotland – half of Scotland – be very careful what you wish for.

Charles Kennedy saw his addiction to alcohol make a mess of much of his personal life; but he remained a decent and generous spirited human being, possessed of no small grace and light years distant from the behaviour that has characterised the SNP brigades who harried and abused him.

The SNP, who have known of Mr Smith’s activities before today, chose not to throw him out of the party.

Mr Smith has himself chosen to stand down as Convener of the Skye and Lochalsh constituency branch – but remains an accepted member of the party. His behaviour cannot be excused and dismissed as that of a naughty boy. It has been plain black scummery from a responsible adult.
